🌦️ Making Rain in a Jar – P3/4 Weather Investigation

27th Feb 2026

To finish our Weather topic, P3/4 carried out a hands‑on investigation to see if they could make rain in a jar. Using shaving foam, water and blue food colouring, the children created their own miniature rain clouds.

Before adding the food colouring, everyone made predictions about what they thought would happen. Then we carefully added drops of colouring onto the shaving‑foam “cloud” and watched closely. We discovered that the food colouring slowly travelled through the foam and into the water below, forming “raindrops”. This helped us understand how, in real clouds, water droplets become heavy and eventually fall as rain.

We also created weather‑themed paintings, exploring the different colours we might see in the sky during sunshine, storms, snow or windy weather. The children discussed how the sky changes and used this to inspire their artwork.

Everyone had a brilliant time experimenting, observing, painting and learning all about weather. What a fun way to finish our topic!
