Farmhouse Takeover with P3/4

15th Apr 2026

Today, P3/4 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Ulster Folk Museum. Although we had been a little worried about the weather, luck was on our side and it stayed dry throughout the day.

We were introduced to the Elliott family by our lovely guide, Christabel, who told us all about life on the farm over 100 years ago. The children then had the opportunity to try some of the jobs the Elliott children would have been responsible for, such as collecting eggs and shovelling dirty straw that the animals had used for their bedding. It was tough work, but the children rose to the challenge brilliantly.

We visited the farmhouse and met Claire, who had a special treat waiting for us after the children completed their chores. The children experienced what daily life was like without technology and learned how clothes were washed and left out to dry on the hedges. Once the chores were finished, everyone enjoyed tasting some delicious homemade soda bread.

After lunch, we explored the rest of the museum and had great fun in the old schoolhouse, as well as playing with some of the traditional playground equipment. We did struggle to stay serious in the schoolroom, but thankfully the teacher wasn’t there to tell us off!

Overall, we had a wonderful day full of learning and fun—and we’re sure everyone will sleep well tonight!
