Mummifying Tomatoes

6th Apr 2017

As part of our Ancient Egypt topic, we have been learning all about the art of mummification. Today, we got to put it into practice as we mummified some tomatoes. First, we cut off the top and scooped out all the seeds. This represented the organs being removed from the body. Then, we cleaned the tomatoes, inside and out with antibacterial handwash, to represent the cleaning of the body.

Then, we weighed each tomato. We will weigh them again when the mummification process is over to compare.

Then, we packed the 'body' with Natron, made with 50/50 baking soda and salt. Then, we placed it in a container and packed it tight with more of the Natron, before putting the lid on the 'coffin'.

One tomato was left untouched so that we could see the difference after a few weeks.
