You say potato!

25th Sep 2018

Last week, to link in with the current topic of the Irish Potato Famine, P7s had a visit from some local potato experts: Stewart Meredith from Wilson's Country and Derrick Erwin.

They talked to the children about how potatoes grow and the different steps taken; the field gets ploughed and stones are removed before the potatoes are planted. As we have been learning about the blight, which is still a risk to potato crops today, we learnt about how the blight affects the plants and how they get sprayed weekly to prevent it.

We learnt that potatoes contain vitamin C, protein, carbs and fibre.

The children got a goodie bag home - with some new potatoes, a pen, notepad and stickers.
