Physical Development and Movement – Foundation Stage
Physical Development and Movement is a key part of learning in the Foundation Stage. It helps children build important movement skills like:
- Co-ordination
- Balance
- Control
- Locomotion (moving from one place to another)
- Manipulation (handling objects)
Children take part in activities such as:
- Athletics
- Dance
- Games
- Gymnastics
These activities help children grow in confidence and self-esteem. They also learn about staying safe and how being active supports good health.
Children should enjoy daily physical activity, indoors or outdoors. This includes free physical play and planned PE sessions.
Activities will allow children to work:
- On their own
- With a partner
- In small groups
Teachers support children in developing fundamental movement skills, which are essential for long-term health and wellbeing.
